What did boys learn?
They learned how to hunt fish, make bowls, masks , cooking boxes out of wood, burn the base of a cedar tree, paddle a sixty foot canoe, canoe through storms and currents, and a teacher would help them find there talents.
What did girls learn?
They learned how to handle a canoe, swim, take care of the home, dry and smoke fish, gather shellfish and berries, weave basket tightly, weave bark clothing,and weave blankets.
What is a spirit quest?
When a boy was about twelve he walked away from his village on a winter day and went into the forest. He bathed in an icy stream and rubbed his skin with branches till it bled. He wandered until he found the spirits. The spirits would tell him what he would be and his power would be.
