Chilkat Blankets

by Anna

Chilkat Blankets are like treasures. YOu had to be very rich to own one, and if you were a high rank and invited to a potlach, you might even get one. This is because these blankets were made out of goat wool from goat skin, and that was very hard to hunt or find, and you needed three goat skins! Luckily in the warm weather, the goats were shedding, so all the Indians had to do was go into the forest and collect the wool that was hanging around in the bushes.
The gorgeous and rare blankets were made by Chilkat women in Alaska, taking more than six months. The Chilkat woman copied the design that her father or husband had painted on a board. Below is an example of a Chilkat blanket.
